A blank map quiz from any video
Seeing a place on a labelled map is easy. Finding it on an empty one is how you know you've learned it. Map Along takes the places from the YouTube video you just watched, hides every label, and asks you to point to them.
How the challenge works
The labels disappear
City names, country names and roads vanish from the map. Coastlines, rivers, mountains and terrain stay, the same clues you'd have on a paper blank map.
Eight places from the video
You get up to eight places the video mentioned, in random order. The map stays on one view for the whole round, so the camera never gives away where the next answer is.
Points by distance
Click where you think the place is. Within about 25 km earns the full 1,000 points, a few hundred kilometres off still scores, and the wrong continent scores close to nothing. After each guess you see the real spot, how far off you were, and its modern name.
Jump back to the video
Not sure where Samarkand was? Click Watch this part and the video jumps to the moment the place came up. Then play again and beat your score.
Only places with one right answer
Routes, seas, regions and empires are left out because they don't have a single point to click, and so are places Map Along isn't confident about. You're never marked wrong on a guess the map can't check.
Who it's for
Geography students
Blank map tests are a classroom staple. Practise on the places from the videos you're actually studying, instead of a random list of capitals.
Travellers
Watched a two-week itinerary for Japan? Check that you know where Kyoto, Hiroshima and Hakone are before you book the trains.
History fans
Ancient cities don't come with signposts. Finding Carthage, Babylon or Constantinople on an empty map is harder than it looks, and much more satisfying.

Questions
Why is Blank map greyed out on some videos?
The challenge needs at least three places it can score you on. Videos that mostly talk about regions, seas or routes don't have enough single points to click.
Does it cost credits?
No. Once you've mapped a video, you can play its blank map as often as you like. The challenge is part of the Voyager plan and included in the free trial.
Can I get different places each time?
Yes. Each game picks up to eight places in random order, so videos with many places give you a new round every time. Want to test what was said too? Take the video quiz.
Put the map to the test
New accounts get 3 videos free, blank map included. The blank-map challenge and video quizzes come with Voyager, from $5.99/month for 120 credits. See pricing.
