Terms of Service
Last updated: October 8, 2026
These terms apply when you use the Map Along Chrome extension, this website and our API (together, "Map Along"). By using Map Along you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use it.
What Map Along does
Map Along shows the places mentioned in YouTube videos on a map, in sync with playback. Places are found automatically by an AI model from the video's captions or, for videos without captions, from an AI transcription of the video.
Accuracy
The places, dates, borders and other details are generated automatically and can be wrong or incomplete: a misheard name, an approximate location, an outline that doesn't match the era. Map Along is for curiosity and learning. Don't rely on it where accuracy really matters, such as navigation, research you publish, or legal and safety decisions.
Your account
- You sign in with a Google account and are responsible for what happens under your account.
- One account per person. Don't create accounts to collect extra free credits.
- We may suspend accounts that break these terms.
Credits
- Opening a video's map uses one credit (two for videos over an hour), whether Map Along maps it for you or someone already mapped it. After that the video is yours: reopening it, exporting it or taking its quiz uses no more credits.
- If mapping fails, the credit is refunded automatically.
- Videos over 1 hour use two credits, and videos over 2 hours can't be mapped. The Map this video button shows this before you use any credits.
- Videos without captions can be transcribed by an AI model and then mapped, on paid plans only. This uses one extra credit (two for videos up to an hour, three for longer ones), and Map Along shows the exact cost and asks you before charging. Anyone who opens that video's map afterwards pays the usual price. Only public videos can be transcribed, and to keep costs fair there is a daily limit on transcriptions. AI transcriptions can contain mistakes, especially in names.
- Plan credits are for the month they're given in: unused credits don't roll over, and they end when your plan ends. Videos you already opened stay yours. Credits have no cash value, can't be transferred, and are non-refundable once used, except where the law requires otherwise.
- New accounts get a few trial credits to try Map Along. We may change trial credit amounts and prices for future purchases.
Plans and billing
- Plans are monthly or yearly subscriptions sold through Lemon Squeezy, our reseller and merchant of record. Your payment, invoices and any sales tax or VAT are handled by Lemon Squeezy under their buyer terms. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay.
- Every month of your plan sets the credits on the account you're signed in with to the plan's amount (Explorer: 30, Voyager: 120). Your first month adds them to any trial credits you have left. Yearly plans are billed once a year and get their credits every month.
- Your plan renews automatically at the end of each billing period until you cancel. You can cancel anytime, change plan or update your card from Manage subscription in the extension. After cancelling, the plan and its credits run until the end of the period you paid for.
- Upgrading mid-period charges the prorated difference and adds the extra credits right away.
- Refunds: if you haven't used any credits from a payment, you can ask for a full refund of that payment within 14 days. Email support@mapalong.app with your order number.
Quizzes
Video quizzes and the blank-map challenge are included with the Voyager plan and with new accounts' trial credits, for videos you've opened. Quiz questions are written by an AI model from the video's captions (or its AI transcription) and are shared by everyone who opens the same video's quiz. They can contain mistakes.
Shared maps
Map results are shared: once a video is mapped, everyone who opens it sees the same map. Results contain information about the video, never about you. We may correct or remove results that are wrong or abusive.
Acceptable use
Please don't:
- send fake or manipulated captions, or try to put misleading results on the shared map;
- use scripts or bots to map videos in bulk, or overload the service;
- try to get around credits, sign-in or rate limits, or access other people's data;
- resell or redistribute Map Along's data at scale without our permission.
YouTube and other services
Map Along is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by YouTube or Google. Videos and captions belong to their owners; Map Along only reads captions of videos you choose to map, to find the places in them, and only transcribes public videos without captions when you ask it to. Your use of YouTube is governed by YouTube's own terms. Map tiles are provided by Mapbox and OpenStreetMap contributors; historical borders come from Cliopatria (Seshat Global History Databank, CC BY 4.0) and Natural Earth.
Availability
We work to keep Map Along running, but we can't promise it will always be available or error-free. We may change or discontinue features. If we ever shut Map Along down, we'll give reasonable notice.
Liability
Map Along is provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that can't be limited by contract.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. We'll change the date at the top, and for significant changes we'll tell signed-in users in the extension. Continuing to use Map Along after a change means you accept the new terms.
